As the Sabbat Campaign continues, Warmaster Macaroth launches his attack on the Cabal system, his primary goal to recapture three vital fortress worlds, and this is where most historical records are focused. But there were many subsidiary assaults, among them the liberation of Saint Sabbat's own home planet, the shrine world Hagia.

For six thousand years Hagia has been a sacred place for the Imperium, now it is overrun by Infardi, Chaos troops posing as pilgrims. While fighting to retake the capital city Doctrinopolis, disaster overtakes the Imperial forces, plunging Gaunt deep into despair. The Imperial situation is hopeless, a massive Chaos fleet approaches, and no reinforcements are available; they must evacuate or die.

To redeem his reputation and his soul, Gaunt undertakes a desperate mission, with the Ghosts and a division of Pardus Armour, he must travel high up into the mountains to retrieve the saint's holy relics before they are captured by the arch-enemy.
